“Range-Time 101”
Make going to the range a less intimidating experience. When you go to your local range, make sure you have your basic needed items:
Carrying case/range bag: most ranges will not allow you to carry your firearm on your person. It must be in an appropriate carrying bag. This is if you are taking your own firearm. You can rent one at the range, if not. No sweat!
Eye protection and Ear Protection: A.K.A. “Eyes and Ears.” You’ll sound really cool when you know the lingo! Wink, wink! ;-)
Ammunition. Again, you can rent this at the range. If you happen to have the appropriate size ammunition and want to rent their gun, they will require that you purchase their ammo. Most ranges want to track how their firearms are operating and knowing that the ammo is probably not the issue, lessens the guess-work when needing to service the gun.
Target. Again, this can be purchased at the range, for a very low fee. Most are anywhere from $1-$2 depending on the level of fanciness. You can always call ahead for all rental prices.
Firearm. Again, you can rent one at the range.
Ladies, it’s best not to wear v-neck or low-cut tops. Not because of lurking eyes, but because….the brass burns if it gets into your shirt! Then people will be looking to watch your dance!
Baseball caps can sometimes help, but this is more with outdoor ranges. Keeping the glare down, helps. It can also help guard your face in the event of popping brass, near your head. More of distraction than anything.
Closed toes shoes are always best. Some ranges offer disposable shoe covers, but I wouldn’t bank on it. Just keep an old pair of tennis or any comfortable closed toe shoe in your trunk. Then you’ll be good to go whenever you get an unplanned “hankering” for some shoot-time.
If you have any questions about procedures or pricing, don’t hesitate to call the range directly. They’re usually pretty helpful and eager to assist you in planning.
Work on those things that you have challenges with. Get familiar with your firearm, even if it’s renting one that you’re considering. Some ranges will allow you to try more than one firearm, during your rent time. Ask at the counter.
Have fun!
